Mark Miller recently wrote brilliantly about ways that reading enhances writing. He touched on Scott & Nagy’s (2004) ‘word consciousness’ model about the central role of the teacher as the cornerstone of this relationship.

Bedrock provides you with granular insights about the tier 2 trends in your classroom. As a useful addendum, here are three ways you can begin to use the richness of the Bedrock platform today to do just this:

  1. Use the Block placement report to give you a sense of the blocks your learners are on. You can then visit your class’ ‘knowledge trends’ report and get a sense of the words your learners already know, the ones they’re still learning and the ones they’ve just learned. The tier 2 nature of the words guarantees that you will be able to weave them into whatever topic you are studying.
  2. Export the holistic assessment results from your teacher dashboard and look vertically for the class trends; you’ll know for certain which aspects of grammar to deliberately ask your learners to reflect upon. You can now use our brilliant Classroom Hub to support grammar instruction in the classroom based on these insights too!
  3. Before I start here, it’s worth saying that when you’ve added words to your Curriculum Map, you can now use Mapper at the front of your classroom! You’ve probably meant to do it for a while, but take the time today to get to know Mapper. Put simply, it allows you to select from tens of thousands of subject-specific words, sequence, teach and identify knowledge gaps in your class. If you’re into fostering word consciousness (and who isn’t?!) you’ll want Mapper in your corner. More on the deeper thinking behind Mapper can be read here.
